Meet Ms. Murray
A consultant surgeon whose training took her through Oxford, London, New York and Boston, and who now operates at University College London Hospitals, with a focus that remains firmly on the patient in front of her.
Ms. Alice Murray is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at University College London Hospitals, one of the country's highest-volume centres for bowel disease. She trained at the University of Oxford and The Royal Free / UCL, ranked first among women nationally, and second of all candidates overall, at her specialty surgical interviews, and completed sub-specialist fellowships at St Mark's National Bowel Hospital. She holds a PhD from Imperial College London and spent three years in research posts at Columbia and Harvard.

WHEN TO SEEK HELP
Most bowel symptoms have a simple, treatable cause, although some deserve prompt specialist attention. If any of the following sound familiar, an early consultation offers clarity and peace of mind.

Bleeding from the bottom
Rectal bleeding is common and usually benign, but it should always be properly assessed rather than assumed to be haemorrhoids.

A change in bowel habit
Looser stools, constipation, straining, or a change in how often you go, especially lasting more than a few weeks, warrants specialist review.

Pain, lumps or swelling
Anal pain, lumps or discomfort when sitting or passing stools are highly treatable, and nothing to be embarrassed about.

Difficulty controlling your bowels
Bowel incontinence and urgency affect far more people than is openly talked about. Effective pelvic floor treatments are available and often successful.

Abdominal pain or bloating
Ongoing cramping, bloating or unexplained weight loss should be investigated to rule out inflammatory and other bowel conditions.

If bowel cancer or inflammatory bowel disease runs in your family, a screening conversation is a sensible step.
